Like most things in life, quality matters in auto glass. If you call around the Puget Sound area, chances are you could find a shop that can give you a low-cost quote on replacement glass. Most of these shops, however, are saving money on materials by offering cheaper quality parts. There are many companies that manufacture auto glass out there, but few of them produce glass that is up to the manufacturer's quality standards.
OEM Auto Glass vs. OEE Auto Glass
When you call Andrew's, you'll have access to some of the best quality auto glass and installation materials around. That's because we recommend using OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or OEE (Original Equipment Equivalent) glass in every replacement we do. This means that replacement windshields and other glass that we install will be of the same quality and up to the same safety standards as the glass that was used when the vehicle was originally built.
Why Insist on OEM or OEE Glass?
While you can save some money installing cheaper non-OEM quality auto glass, the glass isn't necessarily guaranteed to have a perfect fit. When a piece of glass is not crafted using factory specifications, it can cause all sorts of problems down the road. For instance, a non-factory windshield may be the same shape as a piece of OEM or OEE glass, but it may not seat right on the frame of the vehicle. This means that the seal between the glass and the mount may not be precise. This can lead to premature wear and tear on the edges of the glass which can let weather and moisture seep into the seal. If moisture gets in, it can cause the seal to fail which results in wind noise while driving and can even allow your windshield mount to rust!
Obviously, those few dollars you thought you were saving up front can quickly become a costly headache... especially if you have to replace the glass again or have an installer perform a R&R (remove and reinstall) of the glass.
